Alexander Zverev won his 12th career ATP Tour title and his third in his home country by defeating Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday at the bett1HULKS Indoors in Cologne, Germany.
It was the first win on the season for Zverev, who dropped a five-set heartbreaker in the final of the U.S. Open in September.
"I had a very tough final in New York and the next final I played here I wanted to come out and obviously play my best tennis, finish the match," Zverev, the top seed, said.
Zverev, 23, is now 3-0 in head-to-head matches with the 20-year-old Auger-Aliassime, the tournament's third seed. Zverev won 80 percent of the points on his first serve to 59 percent for the Canadian, who moved to 0-6 in ATP Tour finals.
St. Petersburg Open
Andrey Rublev defeated Croatian Borna Coric 7-6 (5), 6-4 to win his fourth title of 2020.
The Russian, the No. 3 seed, won 80 percent of points on his serve in defeating the No. 7 Coric in one hour, 39 minutes. He now has won 10 straight matches in his home country, including the VTB Kremlin Cup in Moscow in 2019.
Rublev previously won this year in Doha, Adelaide and Hamburg. The 22-year-old became the fifth Russian to win in St. Petersburg, joining Yevgeny Kafelnikov (1995), Marat Safin (2000-'01), Mikhail Youzhny (2004) and Daniil Medvedev (2019).
Forte Village Sardegna Open
Laslo Djere continued his run of success on clay courts by beating Marco Cecchinato 7-6 (3), 7-5 at Santa Margherita di Pula, Sardinia.
He became the third Serbian to win an ATP tournament on the year, joining Miomir Kecmanovic and Novak Djokovic. Combined, they are 6-1 in tournament finals, with Djokovic winning four of them.
"I grew up on clay. When I was a kid, I mostly practiced on clay. It is natural for me," said Djere. "The movements are natural for me. The surface complements my game style. I play with a lot of topspin, especially on the forehand so I can adapt really fast on clay.
Cecchinato was attempting to become the first Italian to win on home soil since Filippo Volandri did so in 2006 in Palermo.
